A lot of flytiers tie a new fly and seconds after post a pic on social media. Some say these people are lesser flytiers…Some say that a real flytier do not post a pic of a fly before its tested for several months…or years… I’ll say:
Tie it, post it, do what you wanna! Because this isn’t all about fishing, flytying its an art form.
When I started tying and fishing these Articulated Streamers I approached the works in a Dali-kinda-way. I believe Salvador once said : “First you must paint like the great masters, then you can paint what you want.”
My take on this quote is that to truly understand the anatomy of it all, I had to learn from the best. I’ve wressled with many well known patterns of Kelly Galloup, Rich Strolis, Mike Schmidt, Tommy Lynch, etc before now. Mostly through Mr. Brian Wise’s fantastic library of video clips but also reading blogs of experienced fishermen and flytiers like my favorite blog of Kent Klewien and Louis Cahill on www.ginkandgasoline.com and a lot of discussions with who I now call my friend, Mike Schmidt of www.anglerschoiseflies.com
Maybe this approach can be looked at as taking shortcuts but my way of lookng at it is: After all, you can’t invent the wheel twice, right? or like Picasso once said: “Good artists copy, great artists steal”…well maybe I should erase that last quote 😉
Having said all this, I really do acknowledge the fact that if you are a renowned tier you must secure a certain quality to make sure you do not loose credibility. I’d like to think of myself as being serious about what I do.
So what’s all this fuzz about? Well…I’ve been working on this sculpin for some time now…theoretically, in my mind, and on the vise, for over half a year now…and suddenly, a couple of days ago it all fell in to place. Nothing fancy, a simple pattern but i looks like a freakin’ sculpin! Meet the “Dive, Kickass, Repeat” sculpin!!!
The real reason for this badgering is that one of these mornings, I got a message from Martin Bawden at Flymen Fishing Co. who told me that he liked what he saw. When I told him that my pic was free for Flymen to use he asked if he could use the pic on the Flymen web.
How could I say no? The ego boost for recognition is TRULY immense! Makes it all worth while.
